Stanisław II August Poniatowski in coronation robes

Although almost everybody interested in Polish-Scottish relations knows that Bonnie Prince Charlie was a grandson of the Polish king Jan III Sobieski, the knowledge of the fact that there was Scottish blood in the veins of the last Polish king Stanislaw August Poniatowski is rather limited. His grandmother was Catherine Gordon, related to the Stuarts. Catherine Gordon was the daughter of George Gordon, the 2nd marquees of Huntley, and in Poland she was the lady-in-waiting of Marie Louise Gonzaga.   Her brother Henry Gordon was the colonel of the Polish army. On April 29th 1659 she married Jan Andrzej Morsztyn, a member of the Polish nobility, and a famous poet. Their daughter Izabela married Kazimierz Czartoryski. Their daughter Konstancja Czartoryska married count Stanislaw Poniatowski – their son was Stanislaw August Poniatowski, the last king of Poland, born on January 17th 1732.

29 kwietnia 1659 roku poślubiła ona Jana Andrzeja Morsztyna, podskarbiego wielkiego koronnego, znanego XVII wiecznego poetę.
